February 2019

I hope you’re all aware of Thomas Clarkson and his brother and what they did to end slavery. Also of Octavia Hill, who started the National Trust and supported or started many other organisations to help bring about a more equal society. Then there’s William Godwin, the “first modern proponent of anarchism” and part of the British radicalism movement. They were all born in Wisbech. They’re the famous ones with plaques on the places they were born – were there others from the town that worked as hard for equality but are not recognised (yet)? I wonder if there are other towns that have as many strong-minded, social change advocates born there, or is it something about Fen folk?!

Are you the next Wisbech radical wanting to make a change? With local elections coming up, there will be opportunities to do that. A few councillors are retiring, so it will be interesting to see who comes along to fill the spaces left by them moving on. Being a councillor is not easy and there’s a structure to work within which doesn’t suit everyone, so maybe you’ll stay outside mainstream politics and join local co-operatives, social enterprises and small businesses to improve where you live from your own “corner”? I’m inspired by the cafes and others taking it upon themselves to directly support those who need it, without question, simply because they can. It is heartening to see their empathy for the difficult situations some people find themselves in. I

t’s not only the worse off members of society that could do with some empathy though, we should all try to understand why others are the way they are and work with each other, that’s what makes for an interesting life. Talking of which, do you have any skills you want to share with others? Something creative, digital, the sciences? It would be great to continue to grow the Fun Palace concept started a couple of years ago. I called it “Wisbech Radicals” in honour of those above, and to add to the fantastic event last year at The Luxe Cinema with Big Sky Arts we are now working on ideas to make it a whole weekend of sharing and fun across the town.
