Fascinating Food

Fascinating Food

A number of successful events were held at the newly restored Wisbech General Cemetery Chapel before lockdown, one being an enjoyable evening of Poetry and Prose with readings of works relating to Fenland and a buffet that included Fenland Specialities. These were provided by Alison Sloan, who runs Fascinating Food. The business offers food events, catering, lecture lunches and cookery courses – for example, one on breadmaking and one specifically for children. Alison has extensive experience in the food world, recently teaching 7 to 18 year olds at the Grammar School, as well as freelance writing and styling for food magazines and recipe writing for companies such as Somerfield and the National Trust – where Alison became involved in food history researching and writing menus for properties across East Anglia, particularly Oxburgh Hall and Peckover House where she managed the catering. She has also worked on programmes for the BBC, Anglia and Sky as well as at Food shows, including the BBC Good Food Show where she worked on stage and behind the scenes with Gordon Ramsay.

She is a very busy lady! We caught up recently and talked about the food club starting up again, and the expansion of Fascinating Food.

Alison tells me: “Tapas nights, Coffee and Cake events, Cook Book Read and Eat evenings, The Proof is in The Pudding Lunches, Sunday Brunches are just some of the foodie events coming soon to Wisbech. A new food hub with a food club will be open soon – a café and deli with a cookery school. The café will also deliver, with themed menus a speciality. Fascinating Food can cater for anything from an Edwardian Afternoon Tea, outdoor cookery events over a fire, Theatre themed canapés… the pop up restaurants that have been running for 4 years will continue with evenings in Persia, Spain, France, Italy…”

I’m sure Fascinating Food will grow fast, creating a fantastic addition to the Wisbech calendar of events as well as giving us all an opportunity to learn something new, and eat it too!

Good luck to Alison, I thank her for taking the time out to chat during busy preparations for the next stage of Fascinating Food. To see dates for your diary, news about the venue and join the food club, visit fascinatingfood.co.uk and follow them on Facebook.
