Happy New Year for 2019
Happy New Year everyone, I hope you all had a good break!
I would like to mention again the Penelope Club that I am part of, which is for women who want to work for themselves, or already do, particularly in the creative industries, though all are welcome. We meet every month (next meeting 12th February), and either have our own projects to talk about, or bring in someone else to cover a particular point abut running a business. I’d like to extend this idea of networked support and collaborative working to all those who are independent businesses or freelancers, particularly in digital or creative work, and also those working from home for larger companies. Working at home sounds great, but it can be lonely, and having somewhere to go where you’ll meet others doing the same thing is a great way to enhance your work experience and extend your network.

Something else I’ve been thinking about is the community spaces that we have available across the town, either for regular meetings like above, or activities, or one off events. As an independent business without my own space, I have used more than one community venue, and I know of many others. We are very lucky to have something to suit every one, and all activities.
I have a list of my own, and choose a different place depending on the activity and the attendees – so factors like accessibility, location, size, cost and facilities all have a bearing on which venue I use.
For example, the Oasis in Waterlees has a variety of modern flexible space, and I also like using the older buildings in the town centre to support their regeneration and to keep them open, also the atmosphere they bring to an event.
I’d like to put together a database of places to hire, so that you too can find the right place for you and your meetings, regular activity, or one off event.
If you have a place to hire, or if you are looking for a particular kind of place to use for your business, would you get in touch? It would be really helpful to get a comprehensive list together. I’d like to help the premises owners as much as those wishing to find space.
