Christmas 2018

Christmas 2018

Whether you celebrate the Solstice, Christmas, Hannukah, Diwali or otherwise observe this time of year, it’s all about bringing light into the darkness, the turning of the seasons, and being kind to each other. There are people who celebrate with family just this once a year, and those who work through the holidays for many reasons.

If you are on your own this holiday, and would rather not be,  a local cafe is offering you a full traditional dinner, where you can meet new friends and enjoy the day in a group.

Bygones Cafe, celebrating 25 years in business this year, are offering a meal on Christmas Day to those who would otherwise be on their own. It needs to be booked in advance, and in exchange they are asking for a donation of £10 or over. The details are on the poster. They are not however making a penny from this, they are giving the money to the Lions charity group. So not only have we got the hidden gems of the people who run the cafe, but they’re donating to one of the organisations I have cited in the past as hidden gems who get on with charitable work all year, wonderful, isn’t it?

Just around the corner from Bygones, at Acme Taxis, is the drop off point for “50 backpacks” – a locally led initiative to put together a set of much needed items for local homeless people. I’ve been watching their progress on Facebook (search on there for more details of the project) and they are doing a superb job in collecting what is needed and supporting those who need them, without fuss or judgement. It may be difficult to understand why individual people are in need, but helping them can only be a good thing. Right now, they need more backpacks if you have any spare.

Bygones is on Little Church Street – the small road leading from the Church to the Horsefair – to the side of the Market Place. Acme Taxis is opposite the Empire Theatre (Bingo), next to a fabulous dessert cafe.

Having just had a fantastic afternoon at a celebration of local volunteers yesterday (making fairies!) and today seeing the enthusiasm of visitors to the Old Chapel at Wisbech General Cemetery, I’m proud, enthused and heartened by all those I’ve met and all those I’ve heard about, that Wisbech is a thriving, community-focussed town, looking after itself, its heritage and those in need. I look forward to bringing you more hidden gems and cultural updates in the new year.

Season’s Greetings everyone.
