Happy New Year 2018

Happy New Year 2018

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a good break and are planning 2018.

I’m writing this in that in-between time from Christmas to New Year, we’re not celebrating one or the other, so what do we do? I know many will be working, I’m very lucky that I work for myself so can choose when – but then again, I work for myself, so I have to work when I can!

Are there any more digital/creative/work-at-home people out there locally? The Penelope Club is for creative business women, whether they work at home or not – one of the founding members is Sarah Street, of Sarah’s Flowers, who won the best window competition at the Wisbech Christmas Fayre, well done, Sarah! Other members work as artists, make jewellery, teach singing, drama and other creative pursuits. We meet regularly and help each other with ideas for marketing ourselves, chatting about any issues, and generally supporting each other and our businesses.

I also take part in a meetup of digital professionals, Digital People in Peterborough (DPiP), who work within businesses as well as for themselves. I wondered if this was also something that could work locally? These are not the usual networking/business meetings. These are groups run by those involved, and we chat, celebrate, or commiserate! We often find ways to work together – for example, Sarah offers space in her shop for makers to display their work, and I’m part of the team running STEMfest in Peterborough with DPiP.

If you work in the arts, or digital, (or both), and would like to be involved in a friendly supportive network of like-minded people, please do get in touch now. I’d like to see events, exhibitions, markets or whatever else we come up with so that we can work locally and encourage people to shop locally from independent makers or use local suppliers and services.

With the heritage places I mentioned last time, particularly the Museum and the Cemetery project, there will be opportunities for involvement of creative people in activities, workshops and exhibitions so do let me know if you want to be involved. As I said last time, I’m excited about the coming year with all the improvements happening across the area, but particularly in Wisbech heritage. To that end, I’m planning a series of articles focussed on each of the major projects, and I’m also talking to other organisations and getting them involved, so I hope to bring you more details soon.

A brief heritage roundup to get us started:

If you’d like to contribute financially, or give your time, towards the Cemetery and Chapel restoration, please email coordinator@wisbech-society.co.uk or phone David Crouch on 01945 475388.

The Wisbech and Fenland Museum will be open January weekends with family activities on Saturdays and two book conservation Sundays, with an Archaeology Sunday too. Email me for the full list, or look out for their press releases and on social media.
