Crafts and Poetry

Crafts and Poetry

This week sees the start of The Brinks Festival, grown from the Wisbech Arts Festival, run by volunteers from Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House. If you’re interested in music, poetry and literature you’re sure to find plenty to keep you busy for the next few days! If you haven’t been to anything like this before, this is a perfect opportunity to try. The ticket prices are very reasonable, and it’s run by local volunteers, so you’ll be sure of a warm welcome. I’ll be helping out here and there, and making sure I get to some of my favourite events. The Poetry readings are always great, Pete Cox is a favourite poet of mine, he’s very funny and a clever writer and will be managing the event this evening (at the Town Chambers, 1 North Brink). There’s also talks on Agatha Christie, Lowry, H G Wells; advice for teachers every day at 4pm with various speakers, including Tony Heaton of Shape Arts, an organisation to support inclusion of disabled people in the arts and cultural sectors. The Old Time Music Hall on Friday night at St Peter’s Church Hall will be an opportunity to dress up and have a great night out, and then you can change costume for the Country and Western day on the Market Place on Saturday! An outing to the Arts and Crafts Centre at Long Sutton on Sunday is a good way to see plenty of crafts and their makers and find out about classes run there. I’ve only had space to mention a few events, so look out for posters around town, or follow the link from my website.

On the subject of arts and crafts, I’ll be starting “slow crafts” workshops, to include upcycling, yarn and stitching skills, so please get in touch if you’d like to come along to these sociable crafternoons!

Also, don’t forget crochet, knit and natter at the Wisbech Wool Shop this Saturday, 12-3pm. I was pleased to see they’ve increased their hours on some days, so later in the week you can shop until 4pm, thankyou Linda, and congratulations on winning the window competition on St George’s day!
