Wreath Making

Wreath Making

Writing this before “Black Friday” means I’m seeing so many adverts for so many things. Add to that the Christmas ads and I do feel a little “Bah Humbug!” at all the commercialisation of what should be a mid-winter get together, to spend time with friends and family, looking back on the year and making plans for the future. With this in mind, and like many people with not much cash to spend, I prefer to think about gifts that are experiences; that encourage time together; that are handmade with love, or that are consumable!
The Wisbech Christmas Fayre this Sunday covers a few of these. You can easily spend the whole day in town indulging your senses in all things festive: speciality foods, gift stalls, live music, and special attractions, including new this year, a Ferris Wheel, just behind Evison’s. Kindly sponsored by our local Vodafone shop, there’s also a Snowglobe you can get inside (on Museum Square). The library have a fantastic magical tent storytelling experience for the little ones, and the Museum has a selection of Dickensian activities for you, including making your own card to take home.

Look out for the free map available in the usual places, keep an eye on social media for updates, and come along Sunday for a day of festive family-friendly experiences. Shop local, support local, keep your town alive.

There is a growing number of places putting on workshops which offer you indulgent afternoons of fun, friendly, creativity – good for your mind and soul. Send me your favourites, I’ll write about more as I find them, but one such place, mixing the creative with local heritage, is Elgood’s Brewery on North Brink. Heritage properties work really well as venues, and this one is no exception. I think it is great that they are using their spaces to offer more than visits and tours, giving us a chance to relax in their beautiful surroundings. They are offering an afternoon making a Christmas Wreath, including all materials, as well as mulled wine and mince pies, for £35. This is definitely a perfect way to indulge all your senses and come away relaxed and ready for the season, whatever else it brings you. I feel less like Scrooge already!
