Working Together
It’s been another busy week as I write, projects are starting or reaching milestones and I’m either involved in them directly or supporting them in some way. Maybe it’s the changing season, but it does feel like everything’s moving on!
The Chapel restoration at the General Cemetery is nearing completion and looking so beautiful, it’s really going to be a great asset to the town for all kinds of activities and events. It’s a special place with a feeling of calm and relaxed reflection, just as a place like this should. New online is a search facility through all the burial records we have, if you are interested in local family history, have a look at WisbechGeneralCemetery.org.
There are so many people working towards social change, coming up with ideas to work together and work for each other, that I hope everyone reading this will look out for them and take part. Go to the events, support them via social media, tell your friends.
One group that is doing the”working together” thing rather well is the interfaith community. They are putting on an evening of music from the Cambridgeshire Jewish Choir, Kol Echad, at St Peter’s and St Paul’s, central Wisbech. It is a free event, with donations welcome, and is on at 7pm, Saturday the 17th November. Email wisbechinterfaith@gmail.com if you need any other information.
Another organisation doing excellent work for others, I’ve mentioned them before, is the Edith Ellen Foundation. They, like many, have a passion for a cause and are brilliant at it – but they are working without core funding and would love some support and extra volunteers if anyone has some time. They’re looking at funding options, and run regular fun events, and would like help with social media and promotion in particular. Email kate.blake@edithellenfoundation.org.uk
I appreciate that I often ask people to “join in” and “volunteer” – and that that means working for free and having the time and energy, which are luxuries not everyone can afford. But volunteering can be for a very short amount of time, often at any time, a couple of hours at an event, or helping set up some tweets or facebook sharing. You still get all the benefits of a new group of friends, being part of something interesting, and knowing you’ve helped; you my also get a new interest, job and career working in a sector that improves lives. Advice is available, opportunities are available, get in touch and I’ll send you the right way!
