Wisbech Museum
Following on from last week, I continue with my love of old cabinets with a picture of the Wisbech and Fenland Museum! This is in the first room (I forgot to check what the bird is, pop in and find out!) In the main room is the view that’s most commonly shown, with the balustrades of the balcony above and the large viewing cabinets on the floor, along with wall cabinets, all full of rare and interesting artefacts, local as well as international interest.
I remember an exhibition at the museum specifically about the cabinets not that long ago, it seems this is quite rare in museums these days – though you’ll find similar examples in Cambridge Universities, why go all that way? I took some other photos on my visit to meet the new curator, so I’ll pop them on my website. I particularly liked the new addition of a carved chair by Marshall G Strapps, someone who only started carving at age 48, so a lesson to all of us that we can learn and find a new career any time! His carvings are all over the world and highly regarded. He was also the librarian at the Wisbech Institute, and carved a wonderful emblem for them including their motto “Love, Labour, Learning”.
Cristina Plosca the new curator is well qualified and has 18 years of curatorial experience in her home town of Deva, Romania. She’s got some new exhibitions on their way, and is looking to open their library more often, which would be great as it’s a beautiful space and one of the main reasons the museum is there in the first place.
If you’re reading this on the morning of delivery as I usually do, then you’ve still got time to get down to the Horsefair for their Easter event. I think it’s wonderful how they run so many events like this, bringing people to the town centre.
Please also pop to the library and book a space for your little ones to enjoy “The Dark Tent” – a storytelling experience for 2-7 year olds, with siblings and parents welcome.
