I wonder if Wisbech has a higher proportion of “indies” than other towns? Just looking at gift shops, there’s the candles and more shop near the corner of the market place, lovely smells waft from there; then take yourself down Market Street – the road opposite the entrance to the Horsefair. There’s the fabric and haberdashery shop called Button Up and Stitch, a family run business which supplies the newest, loveliest fabric (now stocking Christmas fabric for you to make your own gifts!) with expertise and guidance on hand to help you choose. Next door is the Emporium – a bigger-than-it-looks store filled with an eclectic mix of vintage and local handmade gifts. There’s new stock all the time, plenty of choice and a friendly owner. That goes for all our independent shops, everyone’s so nice and helpful! This Emporium is not to be confused with the Cat’s Pyjamas Emporium which has more fantastic vintage finds but a very different selection, including clothes; also great gifts with myth and magic images. The Cat’s Pyjamas is on the road opposite to the left as you come out of Market Street, on the way to Hill Street with more indie shops! Go there for the latest toys, and some beautiful gifts for your home.
Head from Hill Street into the Horsefair, straight through the arch opposite, to Hardy’s – a really good find for those looking for a healthier lifestyle. They sell a wide range of wholefood ingredients and eco health and beauty products.
The smallest hidden gem though must be the Kiosk towards the Bus Station. You may have walked by and not looked closely, so stop next time as they have a great range of stocking fillers and other gifts.
I’d need at least two more columns to carry on with our amazing range of indie shops, (I haven’t even mentioned food shops!) Supporting all these independent stores is supporting your local economy. Please visit as many as you can this Christmas, they’re all worth it!
Don’t forget the Yule Fayre on the 15th with dozens of stalls selling gifts and treats, as well as Father Christmas and the Reindeer!
