Helping out and things to do
2016 has been an interesting year, to say the least. With all the news of people passing away, especially this last few days, it’s been quite difficult, though it does make you appreciate your own health and family. I’m going to try to be positive and look forward.
So, ideas for a positive future? Be creative, help others, get some fresh air, exercise and be nice to people! All of these can be done in one go as a volunteer at places like Peckover House (North Brink). I enjoyed my visit there for the Christmas Tree Festival, the gardens in particular, I hadn’t seen the resting places or the glasshouses before, it was lovely. There’s also Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House (South Brink). Currently the main building is closed like Peckover (though the café is open), but you could email them both to offer your services, see what they need. Another heritage place to help out is of course the Museum, they have so many interesting things to do, you could learn a new skill too. A new exhibition is coming soon, more next time.
Research has shown that creating something has a positive effect on your health, it doesn’t have to be a great piece of art or a critically acclaimed creation, it’s the process that’s important, so it’s worth seeking out a class that piques your interest and having a go. The library is a good place to start looking for guidance on new things to do and learn. I’ll be doing more rag rug classes in the new year, as well as regular crochet classes, so I’d be happy to help you get started. I can also explain digital tools that are useful for learning, like Pinterest, Instagram and Youtube.
You could find your own materials to get creative with. Use charity shops: that jumper may not fit, but if you like the material and pattern you could make something with it. Or use the Bits and Bobs store in March (3 Commercial Road). It’s recycling that stops all kinds of things going to landfill, while providing people with the resources and inspiration to make their own creations. There are regular events at the Queen Mary Centre to help you with ideas using items from the Bits and Bobs store, so if you’re in Wisbech, perhaps go to one of those events first. The next is 10th January, 10.30am to 1pm.
