Wisbech Shopping Variety

As a market town Wisbech has always been a central place to shop for the townspeople and the surrounding villages, and presumably also to sell – I’m enjoying reading stories of strawberry picking at this time of year, and I wonder if they were sold locally as well as taken away to sell in larger markets? What about other fruits at other times of year? If you were part of this please do email me and let me know, or join the facebook group Wisbech Heritage Forum and share your story there.
I know that many mourn the decline of the shops they used to know. Some have gone from all high streets of course as shopping habits are changing. I have also read how many do not like the charity shops that are appearing. I am not one of them, I really appreciate the charity shops as I have for many years used them for clothing, books, and household items. They are a good form of recycling as well as supporting those on a low budget, not to mention the charity that they support.
We have such a good range of charity shops that on meeting someone from Lincolnshire recently, after our workshop I was able to direct him to the best charity shop for the things he was looking for and he could spend a good couple of hours browsing and searching for just the right pieces for his new (but old style) kitchen.
One of my favourite shops is the Cat Haven. They are local people, and as the name suggests are dedicated to looking after cats that no-one else is caring for. They have a small shop on the Market Place, and always have something of interest to buy – when I took this photo, I’d just found a selection of old craft books that I just wouldn’t find elsewhere, including online. I also use charity shops to buy fabric to use in creative sessions – making shopping bags, for example.
Perhaps you need to be into “vintage” or “retro”, or keen on upcycling and recycling, to be quite as enthusiastic as me, but all charity shops are worth a visit, as whatever you buy, you are at least supporting a good cause. They are also usually mostly manned by volunteers, and you will always get a smile and a chat too. What’s not to like?!
