The Heritage of Wisbech

The Heritage of Wisbech

Well, it’s all go in the heritage world of Wisbech! It’s heartening to see that after some years of local groups and people working hard to support the town’s heritage and talking to national funding organisations, that it has all been worth it and the projects are now coming in thick and fast. We’re going to see some big changes. The most visible one will be the High Street, the plans for that look really exciting and their new website has just gone live. The Cemetery building is going to be restored and a new community room created, as well as work on the Cemetery itself. Then there’s the resilience project at Wisbech and Fenland Museum, which is going through a short phase of consultation so ideas can be gathered and worked on as quickly as possible. If you’ve ever used it, or even if you haven’t, it would be useful if you filled in the survey to gauge interest in some of the ideas put forward already (see below for links).

There is of course the usual excellent activities out and about this summer, including fascinating talks while walking around the town every Wednesday evening (run by and for Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House); then there’s the Secret Garden Touring Park’s Food and Craft Fair, this Saturday, and of course Rose Fair next week.

For Rose Fair I’ve been making some crochet rose brooches. In St Peter’s and St Paul’s church, there’s always a table of items with roses on, run by Wendy Smith in memory of her Dad, so I’d like to support that and contribute to Wendy’s efforts. If anyone knits or crochets and would like to create rose brooches, please do and send me an email to arrange dropping them off in town. I know we don’t have much time left by the time you read this, but I also know many people creating one or two can result in plenty!

If you are interested in being creative (everyone should have a go!) and you are one of the many older citizens of the town who would also be interested in talking about their memories of Wisbech, please do get in touch as Healthy Fenland Fund are supporting some creative sessions and a walking map of the town. The sessions will be central and will take place over the Summer.
