Tax Discs
End of an Era!
The Art Space project was set up a year ago after a discussion between Lorena Hodgson of Red Barn Creative and Kevin Smith of the Horsefair Shopping Centre who had both enjoyed working with local artists during the previous two Arts Festivals. It is to show art to the people of the town, with local artists offering their work for display. Lorena says “The Horsefair management were fantastic supporters in offering space when they had it, and I’m pleased that the Shopping Centre is now full, but of course we now need a new space!” Lorena then had the idea to create something involving the town, that can be displayed when a new space is found. “In my own creative practice, I’m keen to use recycled, or charity shop bought, materials, so when I found out everyone should be throwing away their tax discs, I thought it would be better to put them to a new, decorative use, and so came up with the idea of collecting as many as I can to create something to mark the end of an era for British motoring history”.
The DVLA say that no-one needs a tax disc on their car anymore, the data is all centrally held, so if you have a tax disc, you can donate it to the project by going to Etcetera in Wisbech town centre and putting it in the collection box (pictured) at the back of the shop, near the Post Office. Ray Wicks, Postmaster and owner of Etcetera, is pleased to be involved with the Art Space and thinks this is a great way to publicise an important change to a system that the Post Office is of course part of.
Pop your old tax discs into the box, and watch for updates! If you have an idea for the discs, get in touch via www.wisbechartspace.com
