Heritage Open Days August 2015
Lorena runs Red Barn Creative a local arts organisation to support artists/makers and also offers sewing and crochet classes.
I hope the summer holidays have been good to you, and we get a few more weeks of sunny outdoors weather left (particularly on WisBeach day, August 31st – such a great idea! Go to the market on Bank Holiday Monday for donkey rides, sand play, surf board simulator, beach bar and more!) Even though the school holidays are coming to an end, there are plenty of activities for everyone still to come.
The Heritage Open Days project is a national movement and has been going for some years now. It’s an opportunity to visit some buildings that are not normally open, and others that normally charge, but will open for free for a period of time over the weekend. It’s between Thursday 10th and Sunday 13th September, so everyone should be able to find at least one place to visit during that time. Our museums all usually take part, for example the Fenland Aviation Museum (Old Lynn Road, West Walton) has got guided tours over all the open days. My favourite buildings to see are Wisbech Council Chambers (pictured) – full of history, and this year offering a free talk on the Friday evening by local historian Bill Smith, with over 150 pictures of Wisbech from the 60s to the 80s. I think the Wisbech Masonic Lodges building is interesting in itself, but also there will be guides available to discuss their organisation and charitable work. One more Wisbech building I like that isn’t normally open is the Friends Meeting House, North Brink, it has a lovely atmosphere and information on their work and also on the small graveyard at the back – with royal connections.
March has plenty of great talks and tours going on – churches, Ring’s End nature reserve and the town centre itself, so you’ll easily find something of interest there. To find all the Fenland events, go to the Heritage Open Days website, and use the search tool.
